The timely implementation of the EU`s climate and energy framework by 2030 was seen as an important sign of the EU`s commitment to the goals of the Paris Agreement. Ministers also stressed the importance of swift ratification of the agreement. The Paris Agreement is the first universal and legally binding global agreement on climate change adopted at the Paris Climate Change Conference (COP21) in December 2015. The EU was the first major economy to present its emissions reduction target under the Paris Agreement. The EU`s current target is to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. However, the pressure to set a more ambitious level is intensifying.
